Some cracking players on here…this team got relegated as well but most of these players remained at the club for a good few years later and took part in one of the most dramatic cup final wins ever when they beat the mighty Leeds Utd at Wembley some 4 years after this in 1973…the first 2nd division side to do this since the Baggies in 1931.
Players such as Brian Heslop, Billy Hughes – cup final captain, Bobby Kerr, Jim Montgomery – that famous save against Lorimer in the final, Ian Porterfield who scored the goal against Leeds, and Dennis Tueart who went on to play for Man City later.
Then there’s players like Len Ashurst who was a legend in the 60s on Weirside and Roker Park, Colin Todd who went on to play for Derby County and Colin ‘Suggo’ Suggett who went to The Baggies…happy memories 🙂
