The Baseball Ground and all that mud…and sand 🙂 lol…they forever seemed to be Star Soccers main match on a Sunday afternoon – with the presenter Hugh Johns. Great memories :-). How much better the league was then that a club like Derby could become the force they were (Cloughie repeated it with near neighbours Notts Forest later). It was a much leveller playing field of talent…teams could be built and not just bought. Every team seemed to have 3 or four really good players. This Derby squad had some excellent players…The goalie Les Green was one of the smallest in the league at the time, Dave MacKay was a tough no nonsense centre half…remember the classic pic of him having Leeds Billy Bremner around the neck lol 🙂 and they just had players that were not big time charlies but just gave at least 7 out of 10 performances each game. John McGovern, Alan Durban, John O’Hare and Kevin Hector who seemed to score every game, Roy McFarland, winger Alan Hinton and his white boots amongst the Baseball Ground mud… great era of football and players.
Sadly, Les Green passed away just a couple of weeks after this page was published. See Les Green: Goalie who made his name at Derby County
